Spring 2011 Work
I was exploring multi-cultural identity in art last spring. I chose to display these outside so the art was more accessible to people walking by. I called the work "Think Tank."

Square Grounds -
NOTE: This work will be available at Riverside Gallery in Marietta, OH during the month of November 2011.
Square Grounds explores several facets of my roots and process of becoming an artist. In the Native American tradition, the square ground is a sacred gathering place for community ceremony. Generally, the grounds are specially prepared before each ceremony where a fire is lit in the middle and cared for throughout the entire ceremonial time. Based on community standing and other details, people sit at specific areas set in the four directions. These seating areas are called arbors. The children and younger women sit in the east. After achieving a rite of passage the young men then sit in the south arbor. The mature women sit in the north arbor after their own rite of passage. The elders sit in the west. In my work, face jugs depict forces that have shaped and continue to shape the energy, ideas, power, and identity in my process of becoming an artist. You can view these pieces in person at the Rice Gallery at McDaniel College from July 5 through July 15, 2010.

Sculptural pieces available by commission; please send email for details.
All functional pieces are dishwasher and microwave safe. I only use food safe glazes. The clay I use is stoneware so even when it is thrown thin it is quite durable. The great thing about stoneware is that if you bring the heat up slowly you can cook in it. We make chicken-pot-pies and apple dumplings in the handled bowls below.
